How
do I get a username and password to use ILLiad?
First-time ILLiad users must complete a one-time-only registration.
When you register, you will be asked to select a username and password
(these are not assigned by the library).
Your username can be anything you like,
such as your name, abbreviations, or an alphanumeric code. Your password
also can be anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security
practice and choose a password that is different from those you use
to access other systems. However, no one but you will know your password,
not even the library staff. The password you set is stored in an encrypted
file.
What
if I forget my password?
In the event that you forget your password, please contact the Interlibrary
Loan Office at 337-6893 or 337-7005, or email illform@gettysburg.edu.
We can then reset your password allowing you access to ILLiad. Please
change your password once you log on to ILLiad.
How
do I access ILLiad from off campus?
You must log into the library's proxy
server in order to use ILLiad (and the library's subscription databases
or fulltext journal subscriptions) from off campus. Once the proxy server
authenticates you as a valid user, you will be able to use ILLiad just
as if you were on campus. Instructions
are available - please let us know if you have problems!
Who
can use ILL?
- Gettysburg College faculty, students,
and staff who hold a valid Gettysburg College ID card are eligible for
ILL service.
- All non-Gettysburg College users, including
those with library-issued community borrower cards, should contact their
local public library, workplace library, or other appropriate institution
for Interlibrary Loan service.
What
can I borrow using ILL?
- Patrons may borrow books, technical
reports, materials on microform, and many other types of materials.
- If items owned by Musselman Library are
currently checked out, you may request another copy via ILL. (You may
also place a hold or recall on the item by using MUSCAT.)
- Journal articles may be requested and
need not be returned - the photocopy is yours to keep.
- Please note that dissertations,
genealogy materials, and music scores are often difficult to borrow.
Videos/DVDs are almost never lent.
How quickly
will my request be filled?
The average delivery time is 3-6 business
days (some items come more quickly; some take longer). Start research
early for best results!
How
will I know when my request comes in?
- Patrons will be notified by email when
books, microforms or other nonphotocopy items are ready for pickup at
the Circulation Desk.
- You will be required to sign a slip indicating
you picked up the item.
- All loans should be picked up and returned
at the Circulation Desk.
- If journal articles are received in hard
copy (photocopy), they will be sent to campus mailboxes.
-
ILLiad allows us to deliver many journal
articles to you via the Internet - you don't have to come to the library
or wait for campus mail delivery. Expect electronic articles to be
available on your virtual desktop a few days sooner than a paper photocopy
would arrive on your real desktop. We can deliver electronically as
long as the lending library sends the article to us electronically
(this is becoming increasingly common).
You need the Adobe
Acrobat Reader installed on your computer in order to pick up
electronic articles.
When there is an electronic delivery
waiting for you, you will receive an email notification from ILLiad.
To pick up electronic articles, logon to ILLiad. On the main menu,
choose View/Download Electronic Articles. You will see a list
of all items that you have waiting to view or download. Articles posted
to the server will remain accessible by the requester for 30 days
from the date of posting.
How
long may I keep ILL materials?
- The loan period for books, microforms
and other non-photocopy items is determined by the lending institution
and is usually about 4 weeks.
- Lending institutions reserve the right
to recall items for their patrons.
- Interlibrary Loan materials
may not be placed on reserve.
- Book renewals may be requested electronically
through ILLiad by selecting View/Renew Checked Out Items. Please
request the renewal two days before the item is due. Please note
that you are requesting a renewal - the owning library will decide
whether or not to renew the item.
- Items specified NO RENEWAL cannot
be renewed and must be returned by the due date.
How
do I request a renewal?
Log in to ILLiad and then choose the button
View/Renew Checked Out Items. Please note that you are requesting
a renewal, not renewing your book. It is the prerogative of the owning
library to determine whether or not a renewal will be granted.
Where
do I return ILL materials?
All items borrowed through ILL should be
returned to the Circulation Desk by the due date.
Are
there copyright restrictions?
Library patrons are not permitted to sell
items obtained via ILL, nor are they permitted to put ILL items on course
reserve. Here's the legalese:
The copyright law of the United
States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies
or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions
specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish
a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is
that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be
"used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research."
If a user makes a request for or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction
in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright
infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept
a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve
violation of copyright law.
For comprehensive information, see the Copyright
& Fair Use site maintained by Stanford University Libraries.
May
I borrow materials from the Adams County Public Library?
Yes!
Gettysburg College students may use their student ID card to check
out books from the Adams County
Public Library - you need not use Interlibrary Loan.
Why
don't I see all my older requests when I look at my request history?
From time to time we purge older records from ILLiad. Our policy is to
keep requests online for several years in order to comply with record
keeping requirements of the copyright law.
